Alleva Dairy is the oldest Italian cheese shop in the US and well-worth a visit to enjoy its delicacies in the center of Little Italy.

Love love love this place. One of the few remnants of old Little Italy. Excellent mozzarella, soppressata, prosciutto, etc. Really nice people, too. Only caveat - the olives are only OK.

I had the sausage with peppers hero at San Genero. Best sausage with peppers sandwich I ever had!!! I will absolutely be back. Tony Danza was there cleaning the grill and was a true gentleman!

This place has all the charm of NY in the 1920s (it's apparently the oldest cheese store in the country), and their sandwiches are simple and delicious.

I like the meatball sandwich here, but they don't have it everyday. You really can't go wrong with any of their other heroes though. Turkey/Swiss works great.

Established 1892. Continuously family owned. Oldest Little Italy cheese shop. Original tiled walls and tin ceiling. Painted glass signs advertising "Burro e Uova" and "Latticini di Nostra Produzione."

Italian specialty goods, imported cheese, and some hefty sandwiches. Aim for ones with homemade mozzarella or ricotta.

The Italian sub is huge. It's also really good, but only order it if you can handle a whole lot of meat.

Italian subs are massive and generously filled with cold cuts, however it needed more hot peppers/oil. Also I asked for sharp provolone and they wouldn't let me substitute it for the sandwich.

Sandwiches do big I eat half for lunch and half for my 4pm snack. Try San Danielle prosciutto + mozzarella. And then grab some alla Calce olives.

Everything looks good but be careful of buying mozzarella sticks and rice balls if they microwave it for you. Ours went to the trash.
