Rebecca DefoeMarch 2, 2013Trains get in early and allow boarding but also means they leave dead on time, with the exception of them being delayed (as my train is). Get there early as platforms require some walking between.
Fran BradleyJuly 10, 2021I never spotted the trolleys before! Nor the lift… down… and then up… with lovely smooth path under the railway lines …. 40 years of use…. Never noticed it!!! I don’t think I am tgr only one……
Jaimie McGuireDecember 3, 2014Freezing cold and noisy platform announcements. No where inside to have a coffee etc so use the cafe at Hallmark hotel just outside - £3.95 coffee and muffin!
Lovely old station and potential for some good trainspotting if you're so inclined, too...
If you have to wait a while for a train...go to the Hallmark Hotel right next to the station..much better than sitting in the station!
The station has two waiting rooms either side of the bridge, nicest one is on the side where platform 4 is.
Reece BrownbillFebruary 12, 2012Leeds-Glasgow open return is dirt cheap if you go via Carlisle (the Appleby route), It's only about £33 with a railcard!
Whilst you are here use a bite card at the Ritazza on platform 4 or Pumpkin Cafe on Platform 3. Saves 20% on cost. Coffee much better than the man with van.
AlexSeptember 24, 2012Carlisle has the most expensive WH Smiths in the world. If you are thirsty and have 10 minutes to spare there is a Home Bargains by the bus station.

If you have children and are waiting for a train ask about the family room :)- The Victoria Sponge at Pumpkin Cafe on platform 3 is delicious
There is a cash machine in the main entrance just as you go in between the Whsmith & ticket booth. It doesn't charge.- Carlisle train station is the gateway to the lake district so dont stay here, get yourself to somewhere pretty
