Hoover Dam was built during the Great Depression, between 1931 and 1936. The project employed thousands of workers, cost more than 100 lives and gave rise to Boulder City.

All the best things of Las Vegas are away from the strip. You can drive over the Hoover dam and get to free parking on the Arizona side (saves $10). You can also walk on the bridge.

The dam was built during the Great Depression and provided flood control, crop irrigation, and hydroelectric power for the southwestern states, and many jobs. To learn more watch this C-SPAN video. Read more

Purchase a guided tour or pay for parking and explore on your own. I highly recommend going on the bridge. It's a beautiful view and a nice walk. Eat at The Coffee Cup on the way through Boulder City.

If you're in Vegas, I highly recommend checking out the dam. Lots of great history and worth seeing in person after seeing it in movies all the time. About a 25-30 minute ride from Vegas.

Massive and beautiful. If you're near Vegas, come by and learn about the Colorado river and its history. You'll also recognize two time zones.

It's a very cool place to visit! You can jump between Arizona and Nevada, the state line is in the middle of the Dam! Park inside the parking facility and keep your car out of the sun.

You don't have to pay for parking if you just wanna walk around and take pictures. Go past the parking garage and on the Arizona side youll find some parking spots. Also check out the new bridge.

You can pay to park in the garage on the NV side, or drive across to the AZ side, up the hill a little way, and park for free at one of the roadside parking areas.

Gorgeous views of both Lake Mead and the Memorial bridge. Parking on the Nevada side is $10, and parking on the Arizona side is free. We went with Arizona.

The damn is great, but the tour really wasn't that good. It showed only three rooms, one of which was the generators. You can certainly skip the tour.

Start off your Hoover Dam tour by taking a boat tour to the dam from Lake Mead; it is well worth the extra money!

I highly recommend the dam tour. Very interesting. Not for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia or has problems with the heat. Bring water. Cafe on site. Parking $7.

The bridge that they completed within the last few years saves you a ton of time if you're coming in from Arizona and don't want to see all the sites. 50+ mph the whole way.

Take the dam tour(no pun intended). It's awesome and you get a chance to take a picture from one of the four air ventilations on the south side of the Hoover Dam.

Have plenty of water when visiting during the summer...temp was 107 degrees...felt like 120. Even an employee said Hoover Dam was like a "pizza oven" since the concrete exacerbates the temperature!

AZ and NV are in different time zones & the clocks on the dam’s towers reflect the time in each state. Since AZ doesn’t observe daylight savings time the clocks are the same for much of the year.
