Spend two days exploring the small towns and not-so-small attractions tucked away in this intriguing part of the state.
1. Stations Of The Cross Shrine
Colorado: Gripping bronze sculptures depict Christ’s judgment, crucifixion and resurrection, positioned along a path that winds up a mesa to an adobe chapel.
2. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve
Colorado: Learn how these seemingly inexplicable dunes — North America’s tallest — came to be nestled up against the dramatic Sangre de Cristo mountains. Then go out and play on Colorado’s most unique “beach.”
3. Gator Farm
Colorado: See and even handle some of the more than 300 alligators, including an albino alligator named Mr. Bo Mangles, and other scaly critters like pythons, caimans and snapping turtles.
4. Rio Grande Scenic Railroad: La Veta Depot
Colorado: The railroad’s La Veta Mountaineer line winds up gorgeous La Veta Pass through areas largely inaccessible by car.
