Nao • September 11, 2016J.Cヘボン:1815-1911。米国生まれ。1859年(安政6年)医療・伝道活動を目的として来航。ヘボンは医療活動の他、日本語の研究も行い、日本で最初の和英辞典「和英語林集成」を編修。辞典の普及と同時にヘボンによって書かれた文字「ヘボン式ローマ字」も普及した。1863年（文久3年）に横浜にヘボン塾を開設し、明治学院との統合を経て1887年(明治20年)に明治学院初代総理に就任した。
