Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is a nonprofit bookstore, cafe, and event space. All proceeds from every show you attend and everything you buy, down to a record and a PBR, go directly to our mission of fighting AIDS and homelessness.
There are fantastic musical, comedy (every Tues at 8:30; free!), and reading events, plus a little-known, but great, used-record selection.
Come here for the eclectic selection of used books and relax in the back café with a delicious selection of teas, coffee and snacks. 100% of the profits go to ending AIDS and homelessness.
If you can snag a table on the balcony, do it. Just walk up one of the staircases.
Bookstores are among the best places to see women who look like Janeane Garofalo. But at Housing Works you might actually see Janeane herself.
A kinda-hidden gem of SoHo tucked away on a cobblestoned backstreet, a great bookstore with some must-try chai. So good, it just had to rhyme.
Iced chai w/ soy gives Mud a run for its money, and the walls-of-books aesthetic can't be beat.
Knock out a bunch of work with a good coffee for a great cause.
great place to actually get work done. the free wi-fi doesn't hurt.
Best place in the city to study and you just can't beat the free Wi-Fi!
Once a month, 30% off all books, music, DVD's. Usually the second weekend of the month, Saturday and Sunday all day.
Don't waste money on bottled water; their iced tap water is frickin amazing.
Hello, free wifi and quiet space!
Being a New Yorker with the ever rushing lifestyle (for no particular reason) a bookstore like this is exactly what I need to mellow out. A very chill, calming environment to sip on a nice cup of java
Iced mocha is delicious. In the last few months, it's made in a new way that makes the chocolate taste much stronger. Definitely a plus.
This place is my happy save haven in Manhattan! The staff is INCREDIBLY nice, the proceeds go to charity, and you can find books for 50 cents! I COULD LIVE HERE. I LOVE IT.
They provide free condoms at check out, just in case you need some at the bookstore.
Nice, quiet place to work. Wifi is great, but make sure you have a full battery charge on laptop: no outlets available. While you are there, buy a book for a great cause!
Go for the wonderful printed matter selection and friendly (mostly volunteer) customer service. wonderful. The prices, be warned, might be a little higher than, i.e. Strand but it's worth it.
The coffee is good and the ambiance is very relaxing
Great place to have a meeting. Quiet, plenty of seats, and good drink options (coffee, wine, beer)
Best bookstore in the city and has free wifi.
They have intelligentsia coffee for 1.50. Basically a steal
Great place to get some work done while enjoying good music, sipping on a coffee. Warning: no outlets available for your laptop.
They host amazing special events. Cozy vibe inside. Check out the collection of uber-cheap uncorrected proofs on sale, and read the next bestseller before it hits shelves officially.

Free wifi, good coffee, great cause, wonderful volunteers. <3
A great spot for a coffee/tea and use of their free wifi (plus all proceeds go towards ending AIDS and homelessness). Steps away from SoHo shopping as well.

i gave them tons of my books when i moved, it is a great place to chill and read if you have the time
Don't plan on staying a while until you make sure you have some laptop battery left, they have no power outlets!!!! Lame-o!
Slate Gabfest was here and Chrissie Hynde performs nezt week

Coffee is not the best, but it's not bad either! Lovely environment to drink your coffee and maybe read a book..? :-)
Free wifi, cheap coffee, good sandwiches and chill vibes. An oasis off busy Houston st.
Smell of old books, the balcony, people writing books and plays, a very diverse selection, a bustling café, a good cause—New York, this is your bookstore.
30% off on the first weekend of the month.
In SoHo, and cheap? Crazy. Check out the cheap used book carts. The bookstore can be busy, but it stays fairly calm. Staff are also very fun. Volunteer run!
Delicious lattes. Be nice to the staff, they're awesome and also volunteers.
