Hidden in plain site at the top of Hackney road, this french owned cocktail joint provides an interesting selection of drinks, and a two room experience, best understood by reading Lewis Carroll
Summer only I think, when it opens out and the diners mix with the Hoxton crowd on the streets. Great for people watching whilst you share the only thing you can order - the 5 courser of Asian fusion
Too busy / and male / and too close to the CIty to make this list, but may be a go-er if you have a brave partner who is not perturbed by all of the above. Dim lights hides bad face, so there's that
Not sure if there is a better Italian in London. Family run, menu presented on a blackboard by the staff, BP is an education as much as it is a delight. Quiet place for a deal, business or pleasure
Cool as cats coffee shop, whose 'no wifi' policy makes it winner amongst the tech hipsters who pretend to love unplugging, but nevertheless check their twitter on 3g anyway. Coffee first cliche works
It's all about the views people. Go in the winter, in the evening and see a perspective you probably haven't seen before. Free to get in, and no dress code on the door.
Probably past its peak but still, that's only because everyone now knows about it right? Cool kids still go, probably because of the pale ales, or maybe the tatoo's on the bar staff. Good starter
Much better than the one in Covent Garden. Great decor, awesome staff, and a tiny bar that makes intimacy a pragmatic concern. Also, free refills on the chai - whats not to like? Ideal for 1-2-1
Old fave that's too noisy, too busy and too drunk to ever get truly boring. Great place to cover up a bad conversation or a potentially taciturn date partner. Pulled Pork Pizza isn't half bad either
The original gastro pub? You really should know it if you're a Londoner, but impressive enough still with dim light, open kitchen, guest ales and good food. Ideal for a group date
No tips required - listen to the friendly and exceptionally well informed staff then proceed to order your invariably delicious meal. This is an awesome joint, deserves its rep
