M. R.December 7, 2013The 500 year-old Temple of the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji/Jisho-ji) is (alas) not covered in silver foil like originally intended. Best visited early in the day or at sunset for the views and quiet.Upvoted 5 days ago

Cynthia DrescherMay 28, 2013Very touristy area, considering how far out it is from downtown. Bus tours can mean long lines for tickets, but the place is really lovely. Not to be confused with Kinkaku-ji across town.

龍November 5, 2013京都では有数の観光地の一つ。室町幕府8代将軍足利義政公が、祖父の義満公が建てた金閣寺にならって、文明14年 (1482年) 山荘東山殿を建立したのが始まり。義政の死後、彼の遺言により臨済宗相国寺派の寺院に改められ慈照寺となった。初期の書院造りの遺構として貴重な東求堂と、2層の観音殿、それに白砂を盛り上げた庭園が残る。観音殿は、銀箔を押す計画があったところから銀閣寺と呼ばれ、東求堂と共に国宝。
Upvoted 4 weeks ago- 龍November 5, 2013総門をくぐると中門までの約50mに石垣・竹垣・椿の生垣の調和が見事な銀閣寺垣があり、中門から中に入ると波紋を表現した銀沙灘や、富士山型の公月台との美しい庭園が広がっている。参道の途中にはお茶の井があり、足利義政の茶の湯にも用いられた湧き水として現在でもお茶会に使用。展望所からは銀閣寺全景を一望出来る。平成6年 (1994年) 「古都京都の文化財」の一つとして世界遺産（文化遺産）に登録されている。
- 龍December 3, 2015臨済宗相国寺派の寺院であり山号は東山。観音殿の内部は一層を心空殿、二層を潮音閣と呼ぶ。心空殿は住宅風の書院造、潮音閣では禅宗様風の仏堂風。仕切りのない1室であり、観音菩薩坐像を安置する。慈照寺観音殿が銀閣と呼称されるようになったのは江戸時代以降で、銀箔は使用されていない事が特徴。特別名勝・特別史跡に指定されている枯山水庭園と池泉回遊式庭園は善阿弥作と言われる。

Massara Nati …September 16, 2013【国宝】 足利義政が自らの山荘・東山殿として建設したもの。敷地内には会所、常御殿に加え観音殿、東求堂（銀閣）などが設けられていたが、義政の死後慈照寺となった後、観音殿、東求堂以外は失われた。一階を書院造の要素の濃い住宅風、二階を禅宗様を基調とした仏殿風にしつらえる。金閣とならぶ楼閣建築の双璧。

"【国宝】「とうぐどう」義政の持仏堂で、文明18年(1486)の建立。東求堂の名は横川景三の撰による。池に面して建てられ大きさは3間半四方。正面左は方2間の仏間、右奥は義政の書斎である。書斎の北側に設けられた付書院と違棚は現存最古の座敷飾りの遺構であり、書院造や草庵茶室の源流として、日本建築史上貴重な遺構である。なお、創建当時は現在位置より南方の銀閣に近い位置に建てられていたと推定されている。"
