Love the cold appetizers! Try the pig's ears in chili oil, the peanuts, the garlic cucumber, the spicy beef, and the unusual bean-based noodles. Favorite hot dishes: the beef dry pot and cumin lamb.

Start with the classic carne asada burrito technique: load up on a couple containers of hot sauce, add it a bite at a time as you eat. Next time: try the chicken quesadilla.

Affordable, quiet, stylish spot a 5 minute walk from the Ace. Breakfast is basic, but then again it's free. Ask about their loaner bikes to get around town, pretty nice.

The menu here is an illusion: just order the chicken teriyaki combo, everyone else does. Add tempura if you're starving. Stay away from the sushi, it's all slathered with mayo.

I've been ordering the same thing here for years: crudo sampler for two, San Sebastian salad, Lobster Burrata salad, and the grilled fish of the day. A feast for two, and a classic one.

The skiing here is great, but the food at the base is crap. You CAN just eat tater tots, but the sausages at Ice Bar by Sherwood lift and sandwiches at Spoon by Subway lift are both a nice step up.

Two tacos here make me feel virtuous; three tacos stuffed; four tacos gross. Choose wisely.

Everyone knows they have great cocktails and oysters. That the light and people watching in the courtyard are great. But did you know they make the best tuna salad sandwich in the city? Now you know.

Andy's advice is golden, and he does great work, but it takes time. Expect a two week turnaround, and call to make sure it's ready before you pick up.

Incredible food, but their wine list is short and expensive. Stick with the market shots and wine by the ounce, you'll be happy.

      Pizza
      • San Francisco, United States

One of the only top pizzerias in the city that does to-go orders. Take advantage, never wait in line for a table. The fried stuff here tends to be gross, stick with the salads, antipasti, and pizzas.

I always forget how killer their wine list is, and not at all badly priced. Try the Thierry Allemand Cornas with the Zuni chicken, worth the price. Or Domaine Huet chenin blanc with oysters.

Their pizza and pasta is incredible, but too casual to bother reserving in advance. Come early (5:30) or late (9:30) without expectation of getting in, when you do the surprise will be all the better.

Don't bother on weekend mornings unless you're trying to prove something. And it's easier to buy the bread at Bar Tartine. Better to come by for a secret croissant or a cookie on a Tuesday afternoon.

So many brunch classics here: the flatbread or soft scramble for something lighter, the hash or meaty sandwich of the day if you're hungry. The real secret: the toasted banana bread with cream cheese.

While their tacos are obviously good, I actually the like the burritos better here. Not as huge and dry as many in SF, definitely order with guacamole, hold the crema and cheese (too rich).
