Film Society at Lincoln Center really has some wonderful films, related to festivals and beyond + their staff is helpful and friendly too... relatively similar price to mainstream theaters tho!!
Try to get a series pass for the best deal. Remember to check in (4square) outside since the theater doesn't have AT&T reception inside.
If you have time before or after the film, have dinner at Lincoln Ristorante on the Plaza right over the bridge. It's superb!

Edgy, eccentric cinema
My 2nd favorite movie theater in New York, right after Nitehawk. Great for dates! The movie snacks are downstairs but they also have some food upstairs by the entrance.
Seats so old the springs poke your butt. Movies so good it's totally worth it.
