The crown jewel of Olmsted's Emerald Necklace, the Arboretum only allows picnicking on one day a year - Lilac Sunday. Hike up Peter's Hill and take in a gorgeous view of the Boston skyline.

The park is great and not just because of the alliteration of the name. There are a few well maintained areas that are quite pleasing to the eyeballs.

Check out the "aceretum" (a section of the arboretum devoted just to maple trees; it's near the roses) and the Lars Anderson Bonsai Collection (see article on Wikipedia).

Super easy to get to off Orange Line (Forest Hills). Unbelievable colors in late October, and no matter how many people are there, it always feels like you have the place to yourself.
