Designed by Emma Stebbins and dedicated in 1873, this fountain was the only sculpture commissioned as part of Central Park’s original design. Its official name is “Angel of the Waters.”

Frederick Law Olmsted commissioned a memorial to the union naval dead in 1865. The angel of the waters, from the gospel of Saint John, rises from the top -- a symbol of the healing power of nature.
