You'll have to show ur passport and flight reservation to go in, then u can check in. If you're given a tag at check in, it's for ur hand bag. You'll hand it when u pass security, and pick it up later

Get in on time. Queues can be long. A great whole in the wall bookstore Higginbottoms located at departure hall is worth the visit as books are decently prices. Nothing else in this airport

If u have a long/late night transit (6+ hours), contact the passenger information desk. They have nearby hotels in all budgets with free pick-n-drop facility. Tried, tested and recommended.

If you have a domestic transit, follow the signs to Domestic Terminal and make sure you do not miss the elevator on the right that take you a level up to the Domestic terminal.

At domestic departures (Jet/AI/Spice), go up to the upper level security check, even if your gate is on the ground level. Much quicker and you can then take an elevator back the ground level.

Really easy to go from the Airport to the city by train. The train station is just 5 min walking in front of the airport. I did it with no problem on 1st time in India, 5rupee at the counter to Egmore

New upgrade has finally made it a decent airport, & the staff are more accommodating than in the past. Empty ur bottle before immigration and fill it up again near ur gate at the free water dispenser

New airport is here, but as non functional as the earlier one. Some exterior beautification has been done, but still the people manning the booths are go about their chores in snails' pace

Clean, big airport. You can go to the city by bus 18A or 18B(bus stand outside the airport). Or train - turn right and go for 200 metres

Domestic Terminal: Use the upstairs security check and stay up there until boarding time. No lines and no crowds! Seats are plentiful and the A/C is better too.

Terminal 4 is the international terminal for departure. Air India is the first gate although there is no mention. Unlike domestic no need for baggage screening here which is a relief.

There is no currency exchange agency once you get past security. And they don't let you out once you go through. So make sure you get your currency exchanged BEFORE entering the security check.

This airport is run by an Indian Government outfit, with very little accountability. If you are dropping someone you will be charged a hefty fee unless you exit within 5 minutes(entry->exit).
