Tou Cheong Fish Head from Hong Ji stall at #02-46 is pretty decent too.
Located on the second floor, need to look map to find the shop you want, so many choices to choose from Chinese rices to dessert.
Emerald Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle @ #02-044: 1 out of 2 stalls where mum likes to da-bao whole chicken back home. Its flavourful & not too saltish, I also like. This stall is slightly cheaper
Hong Kong Mongkok Dim Sum @ #02-097: Mum's favourite place for fresh & meaty Har Gao, Siew Mai & Char Siew Bao. When she got craving, she would take 1.5hrs bus to & fro to da-bao one box each of those
Popular 古早味 (traditional flavour) CNY Yu Sheng (珍姐发财鱼生) available with traditional Ikan Parang sashimi (西刀魚) is available for sale till CNY lunar calendar day 18 @ 珍姐美食(Zhen Jie Mei Shi) #02-172.
Hawker center directly behind the Chinatown temple. Good choice.. Can get quite busy so be prepared to take away.
An Ji fish head is delicious!
Closed once a month for thorough washing. All the food stalls will close so they can clean the place. Plenty of nice food here. Beware the pigeons stalking you from above ready to poop on you.

DIY popiah: Fortune Food #02-004 sells handmade (actually central kitchen) popiah skin ($15/kg), ground peanuts, crispy bits, chilli sauce, etc to host ur own popiah party @ home. Convenient!
Best place to find great bargains and then head out for best and cheapest food. Steamed pork buns for me pls :)
Amazing selection of food here. Remember to check out the secluded corner (turn right and go all the way past the bridge) for more good food.

Braised duck rice (or porridge). Run Ji #02-140.Simple serving of traditional staple. Duck meat slices were thick. Operated by friendly elderly lady. So expect old school cuts which incl bone bits :-)

Stall 02-103, Fried Carrot Cake. Don't think I'll ever get used to Singapore's sweet version. It's just... wrong.
Ignore overload of tips abt Yue Ping fried pumpkin cakes. It doesn't exist. It's now Chai Chee Cuttlefish (yummy snack!) Examine the phantom contributors in 2011, that's all they spam abt. Fishy :-(

Kampung nasi lemak is really nice! 02-34. Tender mutton and fresh vegetables! :) come early to avoid disappointment!
Wantan mee: Tradnal home-made local fave can b found @ Zhen Zhong Sin Hoe Kee (正宗新合记) #02-177. Noodles 'q' (chewy), char siew (BBQ pork) slices generous but slightly salty. Run by elderly couple Yeah!

Great beef hor fan at 02-193 an Ji. It's a fish head stall but the beef hor fun really worth ordering.

Lian He Ben Ji Claypot #02-199. Dad brought us here when we are young and now I'm bringing my children here!
Chang Ji BBQ stingray is good (#02-197 Blue Zone, near the corner). Sambal isn't too spicy but is very flavourful and their grill's char is good.
#02-85 and #02-84 do not have crazy long queues but they serve up really tasty noodles.
Chwee kueh #02-43! The kueh was non-sticky and light, paired with chai por that is nicely fried, not drenched in oil. Chilli with hints of shrimp, the dish balances a light base and savory goodness!
Awesome Yam cake at 02-166 Jia Ji Mei Shi
Try Fatty Ox HK Kitchen for the soya sauce chicken and beef brisket noodles. Very good.
When on doubt, follow the line. I checked out Sarawak Kolo Mee stall 02-40 and I wasn't disappointed. Yeah, a Malaysian reviewing Sarawakian hawker food in Singapore. Oh, the irony. 8/10
Super shiok xiaolongbao & guo tie at stall 135, great fried mee swa & fried chicken w onion sauce at stall 153. And of course, Good Beer Co at 335 is an institution in itself!
Xiu Ji ikan Bilis Yong Tau Fu is the Best. 6 pcs and bee hoon $3 or 8 pcs at $3. Die Die must try.
Desserts: Used 2 patronise #02-224 in early days. Njoyed faves like black sesame paste, almond soup, green bean soup. Thick, chockfull of taste. Disappointed in last 2-3 years. Diluted, lacked essence
Wantan mee: Tong Kee's (#02-111) wantan is bigger than d usual 1s u get @ mediocre stalls, chock full of minced pork. Nice. Noodle was 'q' (springy 2 bite). Generous w char siew & vege sides too
Be careful as a westerner, food stalls will try you on if you give them larger notes than the meal price.
