The Washington Bridge carries six lanes of traffic over the Harlem River in New York City between the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx, connecting 181st Street and Amsterdam Avenue in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan to University Avenue in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx.
The running / cycling path is on the south side of the bridge, upper level. Runners/walkers on R, cyclists on L, both ways (altho ppl don't always follow that rule). Always go single file.
Got EZPASS? Off-peak hours = $6 toll, not $8! Peak hours: Mon-Fri @ 6am-9am; 4pm-7pm; Sat-Sun @ Noon-8pm. Have two other person in your car & go to booth w/person to get carpool rate, $2!
It is a bridge with a great history. Once you get a handle of the best time to travel in and out of the city. You can travel anywhere in the World.
Bike lanes on both sides of the bridge, but not always both open. Schedule is unpredictable. South lane is better bet most of the time & has no stairs; enter ramp at end of 178th St.
Honestly, Avoid it if you can... but if you can't... ALWAYS get waaay over to the right hand side and then scoot over to the left at the last minute if you're not going on 9A.
usually the best approach to the GW but sometimes it is better to take Linwood and Lewis to the Lower Level. Wonder if they will ever get back to building a Lower Level Helix to/from the PIP?
Although your instincts may tell you otherwise, it may actually be quicker to take the Upper Level (with all the trucks), as no one else is doing that.
If there were a spot on earth that was close to the fiery abyss, this bridge's traffic is it. I'm pretty sure I saw Satan laughing on the upper level. Maybe it was Jeter.
George Washington built the bridge in 1756 to escape the onslaught of Henry VII and his band of merry men. He then raped and pillaged Prussian mercenaries in Princeton, turning the tide of the War.
In Amazing Spider-Man #121, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man's girlfriend, was thrown off by the Green Goblin. Even though the story said it was the George Washington Bridge, the artist drew the Brooklyn Bridge
The namesake of the first American president, the George Washington Bridge could accommodate 793 George Washingtons lying in a row from head to toe
On average, first responders answer calls for a jumper on (or off) the bridge once every 11 days. Only 1 in 25 is a real incident.
Buy a $5,000 Orbea Orca, a pair of $200 Giro 2010 Bib Shorts, $200 Capo jersey, and $200 Shimano clips, and ride over the bridge like an inconsiderate jerk, slower than the seasoned riders, mind you.
Don't be stupid if you have easy pass move quickly idk why people don't have it yet. But the delay is always caused by the toll. Simple solution move quicker
Easiest access to the Palisades Parkway is via the upper level. Otherwise you have to deal with a lot of local traffic.
When your on i95 north going into NYC do yourself a favor and stay local because once you hit traffic in express you are stuck!
If u riding your motorcycle I suggest to use the top level.. Lower level has some insane winds at times :-S lol
Nice panoramic view. Panorama mode on cell phone or wide angle lens recommended
When you have 3 or more people, and you have an ez pass, go to a cash lane and say "car pool". You're trip is $2
Best way to get to the lower level is to exit off the turnpike and take 46. Avoid all the traffic on the turnpike.
many cars and trucks been here..when i came to the State..mom pick me up in JKF Airport and pass this bridge from NY to NJ...love the view...never get bored...
Renting a truck? Check the class and toll prices before you rent/travel. I just paid $34 for this biotch.
I know the view is better from the upper level, but don't be a hero; lower level is less traffic. usually.
For runners, the bridge is about 1 mile long. Look out for bikers on the sharp turns and narrow passageways.
If you get in the right lane you can turn right to go up one block (182nd street) & avoid the 181st street traffic.
Do not confuse with the George Wasinton Bridge. This is the bridge that connects the Bronx and Wasinton Heights over the Harlem River.
If you are going into or out of New York city during rush hour, and you stop the car, your car will bounce.
Have 3 or more people and an EZ pass? Go to cash lane and say carpool to pay 3.50 instead of 12:)
avoid the upper level. tractor trailers must take the upper level so it is always congested.
Did you know - While the GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE connects NY and NJ the WASHINGTON BRIDGE connects the Bronx and Manhattan??
Great views but usually a wait to get over unless you travel early in the morning.
WARNING: Booth attendant attitude INcreases when you lie, offer a cheery hello, and ask for a receipt.
The upper deck is more scenic but can also be more crowded. Take the lower deck.
Feed the homeless guy on the lower level of there bridge before you get on the Cross Bronx Expressway. I gave him a MetRx bar
Best bridge ever! Great for driving, running, biking. Major artery between LI and the mainland
This bridge is always a nightmare for traffic, but pick the upper level, the view is much nicer.
No trucks on the lower level. Coming from NY to NJ? Fill up your car in NJ much much cheaper..
Do NOT attempt to run across the width of the bridge. trust me, not a mistake you're gonna make 3 times
Don't miss the Little Red Lighthouse under the bridge tower on New York side.
Try the heaping portions of traffic. They have a special every Sunday evening.
Yep, go ahead and use the EZ pass-lane and hope to cut into the cash lane at the last second. That's precious. We love you for it.
Welcome to the Big Apple! Consider adding Harlem on your list of places to visit while you're here. You'll be glad you did!
Use upper level on weeknights after 9:45pm. Construction causes crazy closures of the lower level at this time.
Breezed right through. And paying only $4.25 because we had 3 or more? Awesome!
