KUSHI is an Izakaya and Sushi restaurant located in the heart of Mt. Vernon Square, Washington DC.
The charcoal fire pit and surrounding U-shaped bar dominate the room. But don’t ignore the raw items—sushi and sashimi are almost always pristine. What to get: Braised pork-belly rolls; duck sausage.
It's got everything you need. Boisterous, after-work izakaya drinking culture? Check. The kushiyaki serving skewered & grilled meats? Check. The raw bar slicing up the freshest fish from Japan? Check.
Get the Duck Sausage. Awesome!
Get the pork belly. That is all.
Try the Komotsuru sake. It's amazing.
You can't order wrong at this place, but I recommend the skirt steak skewer, the miso-glazed fish, and the braised pork belly. All amazing.
Try the Black Sesame & Sea Salt Ice Cream and spot it on Foodspotting!
The name suggests sushi - which is good - but the grilled skewers (chicken w plum sauce, duck) and vegetables (eggplant) make the place.
WARNING: No sake bombing allowed.
Try the skewers for which this Japanese haven is named, as well as the other small plates that rotate according to the freshest seafood that's available that day.
The rice ball (occasionally vegetarian), is best when grilled. The heat toasts the rice kernels and results in a nice nutty flavor.
Get the grilled chicken skin
Charcoal Grilled Pork Belly ( buTAbara: 豚バラ) & Sapporo please. Life is good.
Get the pork belly skewers and black sesame gelato
Sitting at the bar is better than sitting at the table. It's fun to watch the cooks do their thing.
Try the Komotsuru sake. It's amazing.
Pork belly and Ginger beer is great!
check your CC statement. They charged me twice but when i called they said they didnt show it on their end. AMEX told me it happens all the time with the company that owns this restaurant.
The Hitachino Japanese ale was very good but a little expensive at $24/pint
Need to check this out.
Great service, will be back!
Don't sit underneath the speakers or you will never hear what people at the table are saying. It's "cool factor" over having an enjoyable meal & time!
We had three sushi rolls.... all.not very good. I've had better. Don't come here for sushi. On the other hand... amazing salmon and steak is pretty good!
Try it all! It is fantastic!
Bitch ass portions. Wallet burn
Pork belly roll is soooo good. Duck fat ribs and pork belly skewer also wonderful.
The tasting menu for $50 is a great value and well worth it.
Love the duck sausage.
Are you a BBQ fan AND a sushi fan? Then get the braised pork belly roll for a little eastern-southern flair.
The Kimchi with pork is crazy good. And Spicy!!!!!
The Pork Belly is TO DIE FOR. Dinner is pricey, but lunch is pretty reasonable.
Awesome variety and fantastic food!
Thanks 4 d tips all! Chose 2 eat here cuz of them. Not disappointed. Very good food! Excellent service. Came for sushi. But amazing grill skewers. Black sesame ice cream. Yumm!
Moshi trio is phenomenal
Not an izakaya. Loud music, food is extremely hit or miss.
Everyone raved about the pork belly skewers. This one was hard for me but I tried a bite of one and the name aside it was good! We sat at the bar for happy hour and the bartender was super helpful! A+
Trust the tips - - the miso marinated fish is awesome.
Black sesame ice cream!! Has a peanut buttery taste and the sake was good!
Skip the beef dishes that are too well-done and focus instead on the tender pork belly and the flavorful duck.
Great atmosphere, lovely servers. Also, SO many vegetarian options - thanks Kushi!
The duck leg that I shared with my date was awesome! Great place to visit totally recommend it!
The Nasu Agedashi (eggplant & chicken miso) was a surprise hit at our table. Also, try the braised pork belly maki and get a duck thigh under the robata menu.
The o'toro sashimi was great. It says 5 pieces but I got 6! Maybe everyone does...
Large selection of sushi. Fish flown in from Japan.
Excellent sushi rolls particularly rainbow roll and classic futomaki. Great ambience and fun crowd.
definitely get the smoked salmon or skuna bay!
