Colorful varieties of flavors and colors of shaved ice, hurry to finish before it melts, the portions are huge. -Heather Hurlbert, Top Chef Just Desserts

they're good...but overrated and lines too long. kids working there are sassy. nothing better than waiting inn a long hot dusty line to be greeted by a sassy kid taking ur money...

    Queen B!!! · September 15, 2011
  • Food & Wine

There's usually a line out the door at this North Shore institution for its shave ice, the local version of a snow cone.

    Food & Wine · April 26, 2011
  • Wendy B.

Get a Large with ice cream and beans, and make sure to get a holder. To get the full expierence add the condensed milk to the top....yummy!

    Wendy Bauman · September 21, 2010
  • ToryBurch

Syrup poured over shaved ice is the house specialty. Try the Hawaiian — a tropical mix of pineapple, coconut and banana. Just like a Snow Cone, but better.

    ToryBurch · June 20, 2013
  • Nicole K.

it's kind of a tradition. the line is usually super long. it's kind of a staple in haleiwa. so many tourists nowdays.

    Nicole Kato · May 30, 2010
  • Nicole M.

Line is long, but they've got it down, goes by so fast! GET A CONE thingy. It will fall apart on you!

    Sunny =) · June 19, 2012

There was no line at 10:30 am. Shortly after that the little tourist company vans started dropping off their groups.

    Kristine R · September 28, 2010
  • Toshi A.

If you like cats, go there late afternoon or evening. Tens of cats are there for dinner at the back of the store.

    Toshi Aizawa · March 12, 2010

    No tiger's blood flavor?! Shame...

    Laurie Bagayas · January 26, 2010
  • E A.

If you have no idea how a shave ice would taste like, you'd think this place is fantastic. I had a better one in Lihaina, Maui. Matsumoto is all just sugar and ice. Can't taste the flavor! Overrated.

    E A · September 16, 2013
  • Jill

Shave Ice not as fine as I'm used too..employees very unfriendly..lines to long..the shave ice was good but I've had better..this place is very overrated!

    Jill · September 2, 2013
  • Celia L.

Skip the long lines and go to Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha! HOPA = genuine hospitality, powdery ice, and fresh fruit flavors vs. Matsumoto's long lines, chunky ice, and syrupy sweet flavors.

    Celia Lau · May 28, 2013
  • Tracy B.

I heard nothing but good things but I must say I was disappointed. None of my flavors tasted like anything but vanilla and sugar. And if you do decide to go, avoid the beans

    Tracy Busch · July 6, 2012
  • Vyoma

Great shave ice, try pina colada and mango combination

    Vyoma · November 26, 2011
  • Kameron K.

Best place to get shaved ice! Try the awesome hard to get flavors like lychee and lilikoi

    Kameron K · October 4, 2011
  • Heather

Not impressed. The pineapple was blue and tasted nothing like pineapple. Best shave ice I've had is in Kihei, on Maui.

    Heather · October 2, 2011
  • Brandon K.

No line around 11:30 on a Friday. Matsumoto (Pineapple, Lemon, Coconut) flavor is excellent. Get a holder and hold off on the beans :)

    Brandon Knowles · August 19, 2011
  • Napua

Li hing mui + lilikoi + coconut. #onoONOono

    Napua · June 10, 2011

Aloha general store down the street is much better with less tourists!

    Nancy · April 25, 2011
  • Bryan M.

Skip the beans. Unless you like beans in your shaved ice.

    Bryan Menell · September 20, 2010
  • Kat V.

Get it with condense milk and ice cream. Also, the holder(avoids mess) or you will end up throwing half of it away.

    Kat Visa · August 6, 2010
  • Chris P.

A wait that's more than worth it!

    Chris Pace · January 5, 2010

Definitely get the ice cream and beans. ABSOLUTELY get condensed milk on the top! I cannot stress this enough.

    Juvy Lucina · March 29
  • Rechenna L.

Definitely invest in the plastic holder. It's 0.30 cents, but it's worth it. It does get messy and if you get a combination, you can even use the holder to mix it around :)

    Rechenna Lo · March 26

    Tropical!!!! With ice cream

    Rachell M · November 2, 2013
  • Darcy G.

The holder is a must! No way to eat it without the holder (unless you want half to hit the ground and your hands to be sticky!). Also, prices are really reasonable :-)

    Darcy Gassel · October 26, 2013
  • Angelo C.

Get the cup holder when ordering... Worth the 30 cents. Anything that leaks over the edge gets caught in the cup holder. And you get to eat at the end lol

    Angelo C · September 7, 2013

If it's your first time, go all out and get the ice cream and condensed milk! Yuuuum!
