Download the museum app. Very useful so you can snap heaps of pictures and go home and refer to the descriptions at your own time.
The botanical illustrations in the William Farquhar Collection (2nd floor) are really nice.
Great place for hanging out. If you like arts of course. The glass stairs is pretty scary.

Explore Singapore's transformation through the years from a humble fishing village to a nation-state at the "Singapura: 700 Years" exhibition.
Most of the exhibition halls are closed for renovation until Sept 2015. Nothing much to see when I went there in June 2015. However, they do have lots of activities to keep the children entertained.
700 years of Singapore is in exhibition at Basement 1. There is a lift on the far right for straight entry.
This is a truly excellent history museum--so much so that I actually got kicked out at the end of the day when they were trying to close but I wasn't done yet! The moral of the story is to go early :)

Excellent free guided tour
Excellent experience with audio guide. It may take one or two days to finish if you want to listen to all the details. Spend your time wisely:)
Calm n serene!
Look out for the little commentary boards (extra commentaries) near the benches. Good reads while u rest your feet.
If u prefer a quiet viewing of the art, avoid the guided tour at 11 am given in loud Singlish. Beware of school excursions / tours too. Probably safer to visit in afternoon.
