If you can, cross the border into Canada because the view of both falls is better. You get a good view of just rapids on the American side.

Walk paths are slippery near falls in winter. Even railings are covered with ice. Be careful when walking.

Go on the whirlpool rapids hike. It's about a 2 mile hike leaving from whirlpool rapids state park and has some of the best scenery I saw during my stay in Niagara.

You can walk over the Rainbow Bridge to the Canadian Side if you so choose; there is a $0.50 toll for pedestrians to cross, but it is totally worth it.

Arrive at 8pm just as the sun sets on summer and avoid the $10 parking fee. Also the observation deck is open and free. Watch the sun go down as the water falls light up
