Awesome awesome place. One tip is to not to hire a private guide or go all the way to the monastery if you are pressed on time. Instead do the 2 hiking trails in between the Treasury and the Theater.

Impressive site, with all the monuments and tombs carved and polished on the montains. The monastery is worth a visit (850 steps up), it's facade is bigger than the Treasue and the view is amazing

The High Place of Sacrifice is very high. Worth the effort as the view is great. As is the hike up the 800+ steps to the Monastery. Its size will hold you with a superb view across towards Israel.

Be sure to go all the way in, and get to royal tombs, monastery, and remains of 3 Byzantine churches. Spend a whole day or two. Named one of 7 wonders of the modern world!

Stunning scenery. People are generally friendly. Prepare yourself for a LOT of walking, sun exposure and horse dung smell. Don't stop at The Treasury, walk on for more beautiful things.

If you need a good workout💪. This is it. Wear closed shoes, hat, sunscreen, long sleeves & don't forget your water. Start early in the morning, if your walking. Toilets are available through the route

Plan this trip when having lots of time!! There is a lot to see!! Dress lightly, as its very hot. Walk down to the treasury and the old city first and then take an animal (camel, horse or donkey).

Go to: High point of Sacrifice and the Monastery. Getting to the top of the latter won't take you more than 45min from the last cafeteria. Monastery to the visitors' centre: 1:30 at steady pace

Sacrifice point (trail behind the Amphitheater) is completely worth it. Walk down other side to soldier's tomb & garden to trail head to monastery. LONG hike (10+mi). One of best days of my life.

if you want hike all day (best way to get lost for 9 miles) pay the JD50, but if you want to just see Petra, go to Petra at night on mon/thurs nights (two hour candle walk for JD12.)

Get in through the north east entrance, right next to the small village, at 2 PM. 20-min walk to the start of the stairs to The Monastery... Petra will be for you only, no people back to The Treasury.

It may be one of the 7 Wonders of the World, but to hundreds of Nabatean families Petra is still simply "home." Its children can help you to purchase souvenirs or give you a tour - in any language.

Take a pair of normal shoes as you'll need to walk a lot. Don't forget to put on pants which are not very precious as there are a lot of dusts :) p.s. The smell during the walk is shitty

Buy cold bottled water in a mini market outside of the site before you go in. The prices in the stands inside are 4 times the price.

Make sure you bring a windproof jacket along with you. Sandstorms do occur, and wind gusts get strong when funnelled through narrow canyons.

Tell the people that rent out donkeys to take you up to the monastery that wire bridles are painful and not acceptable. Maybe if everyone does it they will listen ...
