Great for waking around during the day or night. There are many shops and places to dine. Explore at any time of the day. It's very quiet in the morning, and lively at night.

The 'Bastille' fortress was the largest one defending Paris in the east. It fell on Bastille day, July 4th, 1789. Do pay a visit to the Richard-Lenoir markets on sundays as well as Lappe & the Opera

Pick up some take out food from McDonald's, the "Kiosque" or the sushi place, then go sit on the steps of the Opera house while you eat, & watch the world go by! Lots of locals do it!

The location of the Bastille fortress was not at the center of the current Place, but a little to the west. Its shape is marked with stones of a lighter color on the ground near Rue Saint Antoine.

Very touristic. Watch your pockets. But if you want great ambiance by night it's cool. Typical : Rue de Lappe

It's a shame that this is all that remains of the original Bastille. Still a noteworthy site to visit for any 1st-time to Paris.

Face à l'opéra, par rapport au canal Saint-Martin, on peut voir sur le sol, le périmètre de l'ancienne forteresse, que l'on peut reconnaître par une triple rangée de pavés.
