Tate Britain is built on the site of the 19th century Millbank Prison. Between 1816 and 1868, this is where thousands of convicts began their journey to the penal colonies of Australia.

This Millbank gallery is home to both old and contemporary British art. Has a wide collection of works by J. M. W. Turner. Millbank SW1P 4RG. Open from 10am-6pm. Free (except for major exhibits).

Anyone who likes Susan Hiller's piece Monument should go to Postman's Park (google it) to see the original monuments that inspired her
Being a Tate member is great value. Entrance to shows is free for members, so even if you only see 2 or 3 a year it's already close to paying for itself. Tate Britain rehang is brilliant!
Great collection of Turner's paintings. Free admission
Try to view the pieces in chronological order. In the end there is a room with computers showing nice video guide about the museum. It really helps to understand what you just have seen. Free wifi
Everything in this building is worth looking at and thinking about. Then come back and look again.
