It all started in the 50s... Would you believe we started out as a small chain of convenience stores? It's true. Way back in 1958. We were called Pronto Markets. In '67, our founder, the original Trader Joe, changed our name (yes, to Trader Joe's) and the way we do business...

Great Deals on Wine and Cheese!

The line always moves faster than you think. Start in the basement for frozen + pantry stuff, move upstairs for fresh. Don't abandon your cart in the line to shop for 3-5 minutes. Reach! And jam 🎧.
    Nicole · August 25, 2014

3-4 TJs in Manhattan. A Brit friend said, "Trader Joe's is wht makes America gr8." Not as gr8 as in Cali, but beggrs can't b choosrs (i.e., me) Get the Parmesan fr Australia. Best I evr had. At $8/lb!

Whether you're headed for an upscale night at Lincoln Center or a dirty rock show at Terminal 5, stop here first and snack on their phenomenal dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Smooth and deeelish!

Great (and reasonably priced) for frozen food, dry / canned goods and beer! The line isn't as scary as it seems (unlike 14th St.). Wish they could have a wine store at this location too!
    Michelle Coudon · July 25, 2011
  • Brooke S.
This store is a daily shit show unless you come early in the morning before 12 or after 8pm, otherwise be prepared for chaos! There is even an occasional line outside to get in which is just insane!!
    Brooke Star · January 23, 2014
  • Matt S.
A grocery store of organized chaos. Avoid during peak times - the after work crowd is intense and they'll often turn people away if lines are too long. Fairway and Westside Market nearby are good alts

Cut you some flax. Try adding flaxseed or its oil to your meals. Trader's has it golden roasted, milled, whole, in cereal, in oatmeal. The health benefits are plentiful and the taste is yummy.
    Crunch Gym · October 28, 2010
  • Julia K.
UWS is sooooo happy with TJ's up here! Lines aren't as outrageous as the Union Sq. one, and prices are way better than the Whole Foods not too far away (on 60th) even though food quality is similar.
    Julia K · November 1, 2010
  • Gajtana S.
Most spacious and spread out of all the Trader Joe's I've been to in NYC. This is my fifth. More cashiers than other TJs so the line moved quickly on a Wednesday night.

Shop for everything you need on the Downtown floor first, then get on the line and collect things like milk, eggs meat and veggies while you are on line traveling to check out.
    Sarah Elizabeth · February 28, 2015
  • Tim J.
The most civilized T.J.'s in Manhattan hands down. Typically not crowded (nothing like 14th St.) & nice/helpful staff. The prices are great & nearly everything is quite good!
    Tim Johnson · July 29, 2012
  • Sam S.
Huge huge line and incredibly crowded. But things move fast and the food is high quality and inexpensive. Even if there's a line outside, don't let it deter you.
    Sam S · December 5, 2015
  • Matthew L.
First Trader Joe's experience and it was a goodie. The groceries were surprisingly cheap, didn't expect it at a store like this. The beer is also extremely cheap for Manhattan.
    Matthew Lum · August 17, 2012
  • Aleson H.
The staff here are always the nicest ever. Also, be nice to the world and bring a reusable shopping bag - if you do, they'll put your name in a raffle. ;)
    Aleson Ho · October 23, 2015
  • Himali W.
They keep the inside non-crazy by limiting the number of ppl who enter at a time. Seems insane that stuff like this happens on a regular Sunday, but that's manhattan for you.
    Himali W · October 6, 2013

If you have to move your car for street cleaning during the weekday come and park at the meter and load up on cheap groceries for the week with no crowd/no line!

The most pleasant and helpful staff of any store I've ever been to in NYC, and I've been to a lot of stores in NYC. Kudos to the staff and management.

Part of a mid-size specialty food market chain. Has a variety of organic produce and raw nuts and seeds. Perfect place to shop while doing the FULL BODY CLEANSE.
    Dherbs · April 26, 2014

I am a fan! It stinks the lines are always so long but everyone has caught on to the TJ craze! Patience is a small price to pay for great products hey? My dog is addicted to the wheat free treats!
    Astoriawinediva · March 3, 2012
  • Elisabeth B.
Map it out first before starting to shop if it's your first time, or else you'll get home and realise you forgot to buy milk to go with your cereal.
    Elisabeth Bromberg · April 7, 2011

Sooooo happy to have Trader Joe's right on 72nd & Bdwy! I totally bypass all the other "gourmet" markets -- TJ is my go to for just about everything!
    Marie · November 29, 2010

Not as crazy as its Union Square brother (and there’s no wine) but you’ll forgive the lines when you get home and enjoy your delicious and inexpensive groceries.
    The Corcoran Group · November 14, 2011

Avoid going late nights as aost all stock is gone. Also weekend afternoons are a nightmare, even so this place is awesome and the lines move quick.
    Alex Cancel · February 22, 2013

Inner peas: great snack. Not too bad for you. Cookie butter: eat at your own risk. Highly addictive, delicious and definitely not good for you.
    Daniel Cibener · August 20, 2014

Not much selection, don't understand all the hype. Slightly lower prices aren't worth the extra walk through the nasty 72nd, Amsterdam & Broadway intersection. Stick with Fairway.
    Elias Friedman · October 17, 2010
  • Charles G.
The chocolate covered peanut butter pretzel bites are dangerously good. So are most of their treats. Lines are always long, but move well.
    Charles Guerrero · September 5, 2014
  • E. T.
Great place to get only half the things you need and have to go to fairways anyways. Oh, but there's always a line, so it must be special.
    E. T. · April 11, 2013
  • Sexy L.
Ignore the "special" that pops up when you check in here. There's no wine at this location and, well, "great deals" on wine aren't specials.
    Sexy LF · October 26, 2013

Only go to this one if ABSOLUTELY necessary. Poorly organized, picked through, small selection, too tight for carts, claustrophobic! Chelsea is the way to go.

This place is crazy on weekends, but weekdays are cool. Lines look long, but they do a good job ok keepin it moving. Friendly staff!!!!

Love Trader Joe's but this one gets so crowded. Really solid produce though. And so much cheaper than any other store.

I forgot to get a basket and of course picked up too much stuff. The lady behind me insisted on offering the free space in her cart! Love the energy here!

Sucks its the only one in the city but the line does move faster than you think. Just come during off hours. So worth it
    Dan Kao · August 5, 2013

They run out of kale pretty fast, but if you call in the morning and "reserve" it... They"ll hold it for you until the end of day. Kale: the popular green du jour.

Go before 1pm on the weekends to avoid bigger crowds, but bring your patience for crowds and pushy shoppers every time.
    Josh Saletnik · August 9, 2014

Their FourSquare "Special" is just an AD, not a special. Big stores should know better than to create ill will. Tell 'em so!

The best place in Manhattan to buy groceries, but don't go late because you won't find a lot of things.

Disregard the name of the store, they won't actually trade with you, they make you pay for everything. Very misleading.
