With a collection of art spanning 5,000 years, the VMFA is one of the top comprehensive art museums in the US. The museum’s collection includes the largest public collection of Fabergé outside Russia.
In1919, Judge John Barton Payne, a prominent Virginian who held high offices in law and national politics, donated his entire collection of 50 paintings. VMFA did not open until 1936.
Many people neglect the very real human need to experience beauty. The VMFA has many magnificent collections and the traveling exhibits are often truly amazing. Join today!
If you're a student, make sure you get a membership. It's only $10 a year, and it will usually get you free admission into special exhibits that cost just as much.
Parking is $5 but admission is free for the main exhibits. Special exhibits are a separate fee. Before or after your visit, enjoy lunch in nearby Carytown.
Free, unless you want to check out their special exhibit (which you probably will). The in-museum food options are also quite good for the price.
Free entrance, impressive collection of paintings and sculptures. Very well laid out. Currently hosting an exhibition about Chinese art (not free).
Become a member! $50 for most and you get free tickets to the exhibits, 10 percent off of food and merchandise. Free parking too. Can't beat it.

One of the best art nouveau and art Deco exhibits I've ever seen! VMFA is a true treasure.
Great place to have lunch. There are always people visiting the galleries. There is a feeling of community when visiting the museum.

Your best deal is a membership. The Best Cafe is an inexpensive place to go for Friday Art and Wine as well as VMFA after Dark
Perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon. Great selection of modern art. And don't miss the art nouveau and deco area!
Stay on the carpet, no backpacks on your back, no pens, 12 inches away from ALL ART. As we were rudely pointed out. GET SOME NICER GUIDES!!!
Definitely check out the 20th and 21st century section of the museum. It has a great variety of different types of arts.
Take a glass of wine out on the patio for a more serene happy hour on Thursdays and Fridays when the museum is open until 9pm.
Make sure if visiting with children you visit the art education wing. They have hands on for the children.
Excellent museum! I attended the Picasso exhibit & it was amazing! I plan on returning many more times. Definitely need to try their Happy Hour! :)
One of the best museums I have ever visited. Incredible display of art nouveau and art deco.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a "mini Met" with collections that span over 5000 years of humankind's creative achievements.
The gift shop is pretty cool. Has some neat fun toys. A little high dollar but cool stuff to look at.
Desgas, Monet, Picasso, Goya, Van Gough, Warhol, Matisse, Rousseau, Gericault, Delacroix - don't miss the third floor!!!
Be sure to bring $3.00 cash if you are parking in the deck, and you are not a museum member.
The Mummy exhibit is getting all the attention but the "Elvis at 21" photography is not to be missed.
Nice place to while away an hour or two...The security guards can be rude and obnoxious sometimes.
During the Maharaja exhibit, both Best Cafe and Amuse will offer Indian-inspired fare.
Kids will love the Shape Up & McGuiness Connection gallery hunt activities where you get a brochure and the kids search throughout the museum.
Wish we could have seen everything! The Egyptian and Roman jewelry was amazing.
So peaceful! Grab a cup of coffee at BEST cafe and then head to the East Asian Wing...
