- A village original. Opened in 1978, still the grand dame of the neighborhood. You’re not a local til you know the waiters.
- This is my favorite restaurant. I would recommend starting with a piece of white tuna aburi sushi. This type of sushi is hard to find and Japonica makes it best. Also, say hi to Shingo.
- The Firecracker Roll is dank. Get that with the Ultra Sushi 🍣 and the Pop Rock Shrimp 🍤 as an appetizer and you're set ✨👌🏾
- Tony XerriSeptember 17, 2013Pricey but well worth the money thanks to the amazing quality of the fish. Try the Deluxe Sushi which basically gives you every fish under the sea and wash it down with a big bottle of Sapporo.
- Jennifer HaackJune 6, 2017Amazing sushi! Not cheap, but well worth it. The avocado salad and fire cracker roll are simply delicious. Expect a wait, they don't take reservations.
- The Corcoran GroupSeptember 23, 2011Well known and popular landmark serving delicious and plentiful sushi. Try the Dynamite Alaska Roll and the Hamachi Kama to start. Or just go with the Omakase.
- Edward UJanuary 20, 2013The staff are very pleasant and courteous. It's not really too expensive, but it's not cheap. Great portions of Sushimi cuts. I definitely recommend the special rolls. Try their plum wine
- Their bento boxes are an amazing deal and you get tons of food! Everything here is so fresh and amazing.
- Linda ShermanAugust 10, 2012Nice selection of authentic Japanese dishes. You can trust your fish will be fresh here. Pictured here "aji tataki". Reasonable (for Japanese in NYC) prices.
- One of the original Japanese restaurants in nyc. They have the best lunch bento box selections.
- Adam BroitmanSeptember 7, 2014Great sushi. Don't be embarrassed to order a California (real crab) inside out with Tobiko, it is delish.
- Julia MJune 27, 2015Bento lunches. Chirashi bowl - amazing fish, thick slices and generous portions. Great place for lunch.
- Linda ShermanAugust 1, 2012I lived in Japan for 20+ years and love the authentic food at Japonica. I recommend trying their fish stew - called yosenabe.
- Sara 🌈⚔🍾November 5, 2014They have good lunch specials that are a ton of food. Pretty good teriyaki too.
- They're more than touchy here about changing an order of an adult beverage. They might even claim falsely that you always do it.
- Paul LevinsonOctober 13, 2010Been eating at Japonica with family & friends for decades. Went there yesterday after our daughter's wedding at City Hall. Had sweet shrimp, yellow tale, and tuna eye sushi - best sushi in city.
- Emily WilsonJanuary 12, 2017The dinner bento box is the best bang for your buck here. The sushi is fresh, but way overpriced.
- Thiago NoronhaJune 23, 2014they have a gold flake sake that is delicious. you can have a whole bottle without even noticing it. the food is ok, nothing to write home about.
- Samantha AmazanJanuary 23, 2012Try the bento box for lunch. Freak deal for a lot of food. Best Cali roll I've had in years.
- All the waiters are amazing, but if you have Tan, make sure to ask for the special dipping sauce. Very refreshing!
- Karen ZMarch 22, 2012Good firecracker roll! And after meal complimentary plum wine (shot glass) or hot tea;)
- Fav. Sushi Spot in the City.Try the Cooked Rolls. Especially the Sake Teri Crunch or the Spicy Bay Scallop
- Everything is SO delicious and everyone who works here is exceptionally friendly.
- DavidMarch 15, 2014The fact that the tips here rave about the California rolls tell you all you need to know: avoid
- It's gone a bit downhill (pieces were sloppily cut and not very fresh, in fact I would go so far as to say that they tasted funky) ... may have been an off night, but probably not going back.
- Kimberly M.December 2, 2012I love Japanese restaurants usually, but not a fan of this place. They charge you $1.50 for a takeout container if you want one at end of meal. Unimpressed by menu.
- Selina StrattonJune 30, 2010Great service! Server made a great reccomendation, sable then BBQ eal with avacado... Yumm yumm yumm!
- Max BernsteinSeptember 11, 2011This place is amazing. Kick ass California roll. Bento box is enormous!
- Ex Wall Street GuySeptember 27, 2017The sushi is uneven. Some is fantastic like the sable and some really meh. Not worth the price. Very expensive
- Lauren BisomFebruary 16, 2015Good, but more expensive than the two dollar signs would have you believe.
