Wikipedia: Part of the Memorial is built on land that was once part of Coenties Slip, an artificial inlet in the East River for the loading and unloading of ships that was land-filled in 1835.
It's almost unknown to typical tourist, who usually takes shortest ruote between staten islandferry and wall street. It's a pity, it is so touching in its semplicity.
