- Alex HennesseyAugust 23, 2015Authentic izakaya experience. A very unique place in an otherwise lame part of town. You'll definitely try something new here. Octopus balls, grilled squid, skewered meats, etc
- Tasting TableOctober 31, 2014Escape the Midtown madness: disappear downstairs to this underground izakaya. Order a pitcher ($10), multiples of chicken skin ($1.50), beef tongue ($6), or the funky, delicious smelt ($4). Read more
- Xeolly VzétoDecember 29, 2017Great to come by at night and catch up with a friend. There’s a variety of food and a good place to drink at. The ambient is lively and the price is good.
- dawn.in.newyorkFebruary 13, 2016Casual and authentic Izakaya, maybe one of the rare places in midtown where finding inexpensive meals is quite challenging. Get started with taco-wasa(raw octopus with wasabi).
- Must orders: Wasabi shumai, fried oysters, squid teriyaki, A Set, takoyaki, softshell tempura, diced steak, and arabiki sausage. Include bottle of sake and pitcher of Sapporo.
- Molly ElaineFebruary 8, 2015I love to get a combination of things and share with whoever I'm dining with, so we can get a taste of everything. The chicken hearts, the salmon sashimi, and the fried rice are the best things to try
- Leo MartinezMarch 21, 2015Keep your eyes open! It was a bit of a challenge trying to find this place but, it was worth it. The Crispy Chicken with Miso Sauce Over Rice was really good and the prices were very reasonable.
- Christine D.January 2, 2015A hidden gem in Time Square. The place is literally in a basement. A wide selection of sake and the food is good too. I recommend the mentai pasta and the assortment of yakitori skewers!
- Gabriel ChungApril 14, 2016Authentic and excellent Japanese food and a nice sake menu. Yellowtail and yakitori was excellent and the green tea dessert cake. A nice vibe good for groups but gets busy.
- Kelly ZhuApril 12, 20154 of us spent $200 and Tried tons of stuff, Tofu Steak, a salad made of daikon & roe, baked eggplant are the best! Others are good, like smelt,
- Harumi UAugust 17, 2014The best value Japanese food in this part of town. And really great. What you order won't matter. Just your preference. Japanese eat "main" dishes first and end meal with carb/soup though!
- Lori LuoAugust 10, 2014A quality, perpetually busy izakaya in Midtown West, Sake Bar Hagi has a thorough array of sake and spirits, and serves up affordable, tasty plates, such as the yakitori and okonomiyaki.
- Every time I am in New York, this place is a must. It is high on my list of recommendations.
- naveenJanuary 10, 2011I love this izakaya. Just when you thought there was no cool place to eat in this 'hood. Go downstairs, grab a table in the nook or the bar (only two spots I like) and try everything on the menu
- Sofia FigueroaDecember 23, 2015Long wait, worth it! Grab a drink at the sports bar next door while you wait. Wasabi shumai, dried skate, meat skewers and $12 pitchers!
- The Tank NYCMarch 10, 2012A hidden stairwell leads to a bustling Izakaya hub, as if you fell down the rabbit hole into Tokyo. Pair cloudy, but sweet nigoris with takoyaki, corn dog, bacon wrapped enoki & yakitori!
- EmilyFebruary 3, 2013Tofu steak is delicious! There's a savory-smokey flavor to the tofu and it's topped with yummy melted mozzarella cheese.
- Time Out New YorkJune 4, 2013This buzzy, underground izakaya defies its dowdy location in the heart of Times Square with authentic Japanese flavors that would scare the fanny pack off most tourists. Read more
- Bailey HuJuly 19, 2013Napoleon spaghetti really awesome, sea urchins are great too. Great afterwork bar hang out with 20+ small and cheap side dishes and pretty cheap sake!
- BernerDecember 9, 2013Don't go to Times Square for it, but don't leave Times Square without it. Killer wasabi shumai, gyoza, and fried soft shelled shrimp and dec sake menu to wash it down.
- New York HabitatNovember 15, 2011Tucked away in Times Square is this often crowded Japanese spot. You won't find sushi on the menu here but don't fret - the wasabi octopus will leave you wanting more!
- Nikos KrodirasJuly 25, 2017Great food at a great price! Service is friendly but can be quite busy. It's the door on the left and down the stairs, be careful ;)
- Serious EatsMarch 27, 2014Go for izakaya classics like chicken skewers and takoyaki as well as the extensive sake list.
- KarenMarch 2, 2016Hole in the wall, easy to miss - but, what a find!! Amazing food. Not for everyone, but YES to the fried gizzard. #sogood
- AdnaMay 22, 2015A gem in the middle of time square and very reasonably priced. Get here before 6 pm to avoid lines. Very extensive menu.
- Michael Fox-RabinovitzMay 20, 2015Absolutely fantastic place, great sake selection, skewers are great, as are soft shell shrimp, tongue and pork belly
- Jennifer HahnFebruary 12, 2012There are 3 venues w/ "152" listed as the address, so look 4 the blk awning with "Iroha" on it, enter the restaurant & go downstairs for Sake Bar Hagi. Open L8 & very affordable! Usually a line tho.
- Carlos FromNYCMay 20, 2011A whole on the ground. Look for the Sake Bar sign & make sure you go downstairs. Make sure to sign your name on the list & leave your number so they can call you when the table is ready.
- Emily WilsonSeptember 26, 2017Skip the miso katsu don. Do not skip the takoyaki. Best place in the area to pregame a show at Radio City.
- Rich ArmstrongSeptember 20, 2011Last time I ate here, every single person at the bar ordered spaghetti with spicy cod roe cream sauce. I got it and it is the best thing I've had in dozen visits.
- Christian BorgesAugust 30, 2013Everything here is awesome. Especially love the okonomiyaki. Grab a seat at the bar or the back room and enjoy!!
- Sitting at the bar is a great time. For 1 or 3 people I highly recommend it.
- Piet AukemanAugust 9, 2014Downstairs, difficult to find hideaway from midtown crowds. Cheap drinks and food. Beat the dinner line that forms round 6pm.
- Wdychen NYCApril 28, 2014Great Izakaya in midtown (better yet, in Times Square!) Inexpensive and great drink/food selections.
- Definitely worth it if you are out and about late night and looking for a place to eat and drink. Love the skewers, the noodles, ramen, and bangin selection of sake.
- Leigh QuindaraMay 14, 2015So far, my favorite Izakaya outside of Tokyo. Tasty bites, cold beer and close quarters! Perfection.
- Heather HMarch 26, 2015I love the grilled smelt. I had monkfish liver for the first time and it was incredible.

- Sophie KrakoffJuly 3, 2014Super authentic japanese comfort food 😋 The fried oysters, yellowtail collar and eggplant dengaku are unreal.
- Dustin LeeMarch 20, 2015Portions on sautees/noodles/rice are bigger than you'd imagine from an izakaya. Yakitori on point
- Ray YNovember 5, 2011Great underground izakaya with wonderful pitcher beer specials. Unfortunately it's small, so a wait on the weekends will be at least an hour.
- Love this place! Always a wait, but don't be deterred. I recommend: hokke (smoked mackerel), bacon wrapped enoki, and fried squid, but everything good. Cheap draft beer (Kirin and Sapporo) too!
- Where to start...try the udon soup, kimchi and seared tuna. 12 pitchers of Sapporo! What's better?
