This beautifully restored Synagogue is located in today's Chinatown, still holding service. Lower east side was what used to be the most crowded Jewish area in 1800s New York. Docent tours available.

A real architectural surprise in a cramped neighborhood--a lofty soaring restored Jewish Synagogue. Go just for the experience of going from tight sidewalk to the vaulted indoor space. FREE ON MONDAYS

Look down at the floor in the sanctuary - it is uneven from more than a century of worshippers rocking back and forth on their heels while praying.
