Very lively place, even at late evening, everything can be bought here, branded and unbranded products, food, raw seafood, and ingredients. Wide option of good restaurants.

Ameya-Yokocho is a street market that runs alongside the railway tracks between JR Ueno Sta & Okachimachi Sta. This Is a food stall heaven, you can easily find some HALAL food here. #TravelingTokyo

Just south of JR Ueno Station, there is a little bit of Japanese history: Ameyoko is a throwback to the post-WWII Japanese market. This bazaar-type market has everything and then some! Worth a visit! Read more

戦後、闇市となって様々な物品が売られ、特に飴を売り捌く店が当時200軒以上あった。またアメリカ進駐軍の放出物資を売る店も多かったことから「アメヤ横丁」と呼ばれ、さらに「アメ横」と略称されることが多くなった。現在でも、アメヤ横丁問屋街には、飴などの菓子類を売る店がある。

4つあるアメ横の看板のうち御徒町から上野にかけて３つ目までは「アメ横」で上野寄りのものだけ「アメヤ横丁」となっている。その割合と同様にアメ横が一般的でアメヤ横丁は言われることは少ない。

鮮魚売ってる店が少なくなり各国料理の飲食が増えた感じがする。中華系の惣菜屋が数軒増え夕食/酒のツマミの選択肢が増えた気がする。

戦後の闇市がルーツの商店街。上野寄りにある“アメ横センタービル”の地下フロアは、匂いから飛び交う言語までまさに異世界。東京で異国を感じるなら必見です。
