People appear to stop at the first ticket machine they find and join a queue. The further away from the main train station you walk, the more chance you’ll find an available machine without a queue.
If you have reduced mobility, use a wheelchair, or even have a pushchair for infants, then the Paris metro system is not for you, expect Line 14 and 90% of the RER, which is accessible.
