For the cost of a subway ride (and you can use your MetroCard), you can take a cable car ride from Midtown Manhattan onto Roosevelt Island, which sits in the East River between Manhattan and Queens.

Neat way to see Manhattan from above. Cost = Metro Card swipe. On Roosevelt Island see: Light House, Four Freedoms Park, abandoned Small Pox Hospital, beautiful East River walk; great for picnics.

Riverwalk Bar & Grill is located 1 block north of the Roosevelt Island station at 425 Main Street. Pick up drinks & sandwiches here before exploring the island. Or sit outside for lunch or a cocktail

Second best bargain since the Staten Island Ferry. One swipe of the Metro Card; if you took the Subway here, it's a freebie transfer outbound and you next subway swipe is a transfer on the way home.

Good view on a sunny day and a different way to cross the river than subway or taxi. There are restaurants and a drug store on Roosevelt Island to refuel

Don’t call a private car like a lot of Manhattanites, take a hike down to the Roosevelt Island Tram station at 59th & Second Ave to hop on this sweet ride. It works with an unlimited MetroCard! Read more

Not just for commuters…tourists should take a ride not only for the fantastic views, but to go take a stroll around Roosevelt Island. A ride costs $2.25 each way.

Great view of the city but the tram is not for those scared of heights. Just remember. Those bumps don't mean it's going to fall every time.

Take the tram to Roosevelt Island. Dont be the typical tourist and head straight back. Instead walk the waterfront down to Four Freedoms park and savor the amazing views of Manhattan.

One of the best views in the city and a lot of fun. Dirt cheap too. All you need is a MetroCard.

Remember it costs one swipe each way and you don't have the option to just stay on and ride back. They will make you get off and swipe back in.

When you get off tram be careful when walking on paved pathway. Some pavers are lifted from frost heave- don't fall!

Tourists it's best to ride it late at night. This way you don't annoy the island residents and workers who depend on this for their commute to and from work.
