The High Line used to deliver meat, dairy, and produce to the city’s factories, so much so that it was called the “Life Line of New York.”
James Corner Field Operations, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Piet Oudolf created a design for the park with plantings inspired by the self-seeded landscape that once grew on the High Line.
Before the High Line was built, freight trains ran along the city’s streets. The conditions were so dangerous that the rail company hired men on horseback to warn pedestrians of oncoming trains.
