Fried chicken was crispy, juicy, hot and perfectly seasoned. Sides like the mac and cheese and corn muffins were delicious too. Friendly service and fun atmosphere!
Carrot cake is the best
I can't decide which was better: my entree, my dessert, or the friendly service.. I would visit again in a heartbeat and gladly bring friends, both local and visiting. Mama J's is a hidden gem!
Most of the menu is gluten free and delicious, except for the coconut cake, which is just wonderful!

This hip down-home Southern joint in the midst of the urban campus of VCU attracted the attention of Bon Appetite, the New York Times and many Richmond locals.
Definitely come in for lunch, reasonable portioning and better prices. My recommendation: Pulled Pork BBQ, Mac n Cheese, Green Beans.
Get the Victorian cocktail. It's perfectly sweet. Also, the bananas foster was to die for, especially since they make it table side.

Delicious, local, good food, good vibes, and good beer. It costs $10 more per person than the Outback, but the end result is food you actually remember.

This is a fabulous place. The shrimp is done right and the fried fish is exceptional. If you are ready to eat... this is the place the portions are generous and presented well.
Get the Fish Boat. 2 pieces is more than enough. Ask for "hot butter sauce" for your cornbread....it's not on the menu.

The chicken and waffles comes with sausage gravy, eggs and potatoes and everything tasted great. Prices were reasonable and the portions were perfect

Apps were great - try the collard roll or shrimp & grits! Entrees were fine. If I wasn't so spoiled I'd probably think the food was awesome - but there are many better options in RVA.
