On January 1st, 1869, Sigma Nu Fraternity officially announced its founding at Virgina Military Institute. The Fraternity still proudly celebrates its strong military roots and university ties.

In 1957 the fraternity officially moved into the headquarters building where it remains as a historical archive, museum and central office for all Sigma Nu Fraternity business.
This 2-ton portion of the Rock was saved by Ora Baldinger (A 133) in 1914, when VMI expanded its Parade Grounds. The Rock was placed in front of the headquarters office in 1959.
The Carriage House Barracks provide lodging and meeting space for up to 40 collegiate members. Many chapters make annual trips to the Headquarters Shrine for tours, ceremonies, and LEAD Programming.
Primarily used for Sigma Nu Educational Foundation Board and High Council meetings, the Center is home to a number of facilities used to accomodate those who come to Lexington to visit the Rock.
The construction of the Memorial Rose Arbor includes 18 forged and hand wrought iron wickets which are 6 feet wide by 9 feet tall. This is in recognition of Sigma Nu's founding year in 1869.
The grave site of Francis H. "Specs" Smith, first superintendent of VMI and spiritual founder of Sigma Nu Fraternity, is recognized by the Fraternity as one of its six sacred shrines.
