The Transit NavigatorSeptember 10, 2011For speedy transfers between the Red/Orange lines, be in the front of Alewife trains, the center of Forest Hills trains, and the rear of Ashmont, Braintree, and Oak Grove trains.- if u want the quickest way off the orange line heading 2 forest walk the entire length of the platform to the very end & get in the 1st car. it will be easier going to the main level of forest
If you are headed to stony brook or forest hills, get in the last car (closest to the redline stairs). Closer to the center of the train is better for most people headed to backbay and forest hills.
The Winter St and Temple Place entrances put you on the far ends of the platform where it's usually less crowded.

Cold in the winter, hot as all hell in the summer. Lots of crazy people, like this guy in front of me. Smells bad full of rats and roaches, although I find it pretty easy to navigate.
Be courteous and either hold onto your trash or dispose onto a barrel. No one wants to be playing pong with your empty bottles.
This is a major hub for T riders; it has been known as "Washington" on the Red Line and "Summer and Winter" or "Washington Under" on the Orange Line, named for the streets above ground.
Been taking the T for at least 15 years and this station still lacks more signs to direct me to the line I want to go. It's an underground maze.- Switching from an Orange line Oak Grove train @ downtown xing to green/red line (Park st) is one of the most difficult times I've ever had as a MBTA rider. Station needs more follow-the-arrow signs.

Ben BuchwaldMarch 12, 2011If you are a fast walker, it is faster to take the tunnel to park st when switching from a forrest hills train to a alewife train. You can beat a train that you couldn't make at downtown xing.
For people traveling to Wellington Station, towards Oak Grove, get on the first cart as it lets you off directly in front of the Wellington stairs to exit!

There is a Macy's next door. Also, the Park Street station is 2 blocks away :)

Always a mess...try to know where to head when you walk off the train to avoid a headache

Downtown Crossing is so hot as it touches the very tip of Hell.
Ned FMay 17, 2010Red Line trains to Alewife typically show up at the same time as Orange Line trains to Forrest Hills. Please be considerate and don't go charging down the corridor - there will be another train soon e- Braintree train is now twice as more packed than the Ashmont. What the deuce.
